The Argentine Province of San Juan Develops Renewable Energies

One of the current topics that the whole world worries most about is, undoubtedly, the possible shortage of hydrocarbons which are the base element that produces the highest percentage of energy. This type of energy is also one of the major sources of contamination. In order to solve this problem, the Argentine Province of San Juan is carrying out an ambitious project to develop clean alternative energies, particularly solar energy. According to estimates of the provincial government, by 2012 there will be photovoltaic panels with a total installed capacity of 31.2 MWp, capable of supplying electricity to around 40,000 homes.

The Province has already built the 40% of the 1.2MWp pilot plant in Ullum and it has two more with part of the panels installed in Cañada Honda and in Chimbera. It also plans to build another plant of 10MWp, together with the one under construction in Ullum. “The energy problem is essential for humanity as a whole and the World Congress and Exhibition ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA will analyze initiatives aiming at solving it. I think this is an interesting energy alternative and, although at present its cost is high compared to that of conventional energies, it is expected to be reduced due to the technological development”, stated Engineer Mario Wiegers, President of the Chapter “Energy and Climate Change”.
