Cities will Dominate the World

In an article published in La Nación Newspaper last September 5, Parag Khanna, senior research fellow at the New America Foundation and author of the forthcoming How to Run the World, stated that the 21st century will not be dominated by States but by cities.

The distinguished researcher shows that cities are becoming the islands of governance on which the future world order will be built. “This new world is not –and will not be– one global village, so much as a network of different ones. Time, technology, and population growth have massively accelerated the advent of this new urbanized era. Already, more than half the world lives in cities, and the percentage is growing rapidly”, explains Khanna.

On his part, Engineer Luciano Gronda, President of Subchapter “Urban Settlements” as part of the Specific Chapter “Megacities and their Infrastructures”, which will be developed in the World Congress and Exhibition ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA, points out: “This article requires to analyze the sustainability of the growth in megacities which is conditioned by challenges such as social inclusion, environmental protection, territorial interjurisdictions of megacities and socio-economic and political conflicts.
