Possible Solution to the Problem of Waste Disposal

In an article, recently published in EcoPortal, Cristian Frers, an Environmental Management Technician, puts forward that one of the possible solutions to the large amounts of waste materials produced by human activity are landfills. “A landfill is a disposal method by which wastes are confined to as small an area as possible, covered with layers of soil and compacted daily to significantly reduce their volume”, Frers explained.

Engineer Norberto Pazos, coordinator of the Specific Chapter “Megacities and their Infrastructure” of ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA, shares Frer’s proposal and adds that landfills should be considered as an appropriate solution provided they are managed under strictly controlled technological procedures. “One of the difficulties in implementing this system is to find proper landfill sites. These areas should meet certain conditions such as: soil properties, distance between waste production and compaction, and final disposal sites, means of transport economically compatible with the distance to be covered by wastes, distance to the nearest population center, among others”, Pazos summarized.
