INTERVIEW TO ENGINEER GUSTAVO DARIN
Engineer Gustavo Darín is the president of the Chapter “Professional practice of engineering – PPE” of the World Congress and Exhibition ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA and, in this interview, he anticipates some details about this chapter.
QUESTION: Which are the most important topics that will be dealt in the chapter you chair?
GUSTAVO DARÍN: There are two main topics: the Professional Practice Control: Systems used for professional practice control, and the Engineer’s Professional Ethics. Its role in relation to sustainable development and production.
QUESTION: Who will be the key-note speakers of your chapter?
GUSTAVO DARÍN: There will be many distinguished keynote speakers. We are working so that the conferences cover the two proposed topics. The following speakers have been invited so far: Tony Marjoram (UNESCO – United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture), Kamel Ayadi (World Federation of Engineering Organizations - WFEO), Marcos Tulio de Melo (Federal Council of Engineering and Agronomy - CONFEA), António Da Fonseca (European Council of Civil Engineers- ECCE), Miguel Ángel Yadarola (Pan American Academy of Engineering - API) and Rosa Breier (Professional Council of Chemical Engineering - CPIQ).
However, we are still in a decision making stage and we may include some other conference of interest.
QUESTION: According to your view, how should engineers’ ethical framework be so that professionals can practice their profession, increasing production with social equity and responsibility to the environment?
GUSTAVO DARÍN: Engineering plays an indispensable role in the development of a society and the improvement of its quality of life. There is no possibility of achieving these objectives without an active participation of engineering. Therefore, organized societies through their states should consider this activity as “public interest”, decisively promoting, and as a continuous policy, its development at its highest possible level. On the other hand, engineers should be aware of our potential influence on the development of societies, focusing our actions to the service of society and on sustainable development without endangering health, safety and the goods of people.
