PRESIDENT’S EDITORIAL

Argentina is celebrating its first 200 years of independence.

And the Bicentenary is an event that Argentina shares with Latin America since the process that made independence possible began in 1809 in Bolivia and Ecuador and spread out in Central America until 1821.

This process took place due to common problems of all the countries of the region. Today’s challenges are shared by humanity as a whole.

Engineers should hold our positions and roles to make a better world and ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA is the scenario where we should fight for this cause.

We should implement the appropriate policies to make this aim come true.

The millennium goals and sustainable development do not belong to someone’s patrimony in particular but they are a commitment shared by all the Nations of the world.

Therefore, integrative joint projects, such as ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA, should encourage essential values such as co-operation, solidarity and fraternity among all the communities of the world.

We have repeatedly expressed that ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA wishes to promote the commitment of engineers from all over the world to the accomplishment of the millennium development goals stated in 2000 by the United Nations Organization.

They are aimed at reducing by 2015 extreme poverty and hunger by 50%, achieving universal primary education, eliminating gender disparity in all levels of education, reducing by two-thirds child mortality and by three quarters maternal mortality.

It is also expected to have halted and begun to reverse by the year 2015 the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases affecting humanity

These objectives, together with the achievement of sustainable development and the association of all the countries of the world, which facilitate the construction of a better world, are the challenges we face today.

With only five years left until that deadline, it seems to be quite difficult to achieve these objectives. We should therefore double our efforts.

Let us do it, remembering the English poet Alfred Tennyson:

“Never be late to seek a new and better world, if we put in the effort of courage and hope”.

Till next publication.
