INTENSIVE PROMOTION IN EGYPT

A promotion and marketing campaign of ENGINEERING 2010-ARGENTINA was carried out during the development of WFEO Workshop for African Countries which took place in Cairo, Egypt, on January 22-23, 2010. The campaign was organized by the initiative of WFEO President-Elect, Engineer Adel Al-Kharafi, with the cooperation of engineering colleagues, volunteers of the Kuwait Society of Engineers (KSE). On January 24, there was also a meeting of the American University of Cairo, in which our congress was introduced to raise the interest of engineering students by WFEO Task Force of Young Engineers. The authorities of the University asked for information about our event and stated their intention to participate actively in it.

AGREEMENT BETWEEN ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA AND ADEERA

Last October 6, Engineer Claudio Bulacio, manager of the Argentine Association of Electric Energy Distributors (acronym in Spanish, ADEERA), Engineer Luis Di Benedetto, President of the Argentine Center of Engineers (CAI) and Engineer Mario Telichevsky, President of the Argentine Union of Associations of Engineers (UADI), with the presence of Ms. María Eva Argiz, CAI Executive Manager, and Ms. Carina Carrasco,  Coordinator of ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA, entered into an agreement by means of which the three entities commit themselves to join efforts in order to promote the call and submission of papers and the participation in the two congresses these institutions are working on.

CAI and UADI are organizing the World Congress and Exhibition ENGINEERING 2010-ARGENTINA: Technology, Innovation and Production for Sustainable Development, which will take place next October 17-20, 2010, in Buenos Aires whereas ADEERA has organized CIDEL ARGENTINA 2010, the fourth International Congress on Electricity Distribution, next September.

This agreement involves a widespread communication of the activities in the media and among the members of the three entities to make these two events well-known, exchange information and publish articles related to them. It has also been established that, once CIDEL ARGENTINA 2010 is finished, ADEERA agrees to provide the relevant papers of this event which may be considered of interest by the Academic Committee of the World Congress of Engineering so as to be presented and/or made known in ENGINEERING 2010 – ARGENTINA

AGREEMENT WITH ASCE

In July, 2009, UADI and CAI made a framework agreement of cooperation with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) which is aimed at enhancing the efforts of each institution for a better contribution to the Civil Engineering Profession.

The activities described in this agreement include the sharing of information related to engineering profession in general, the dissemination of papers and documents, as well as the exchange of publications of both entities, information of technical events, and mutual counseling, particularly in the areas of international affairs and technical and scientific issues.

The agreement is already in force and was signed by Engineer Wayne Klotz, ASCE President, and by engineers Mario Telichevsky, UADI President, and Luis Di Benedetto, CAI President.

INTERVIEW TO ENGINEER OLGA CAVALLI

Engineer Olga Cavalli is the President of the Forum "Women in Engineering and Business" of the World Congress and Exhibition: ENGINEERING 2010-ARGENTINA gives her opinion about the obstacles that women engineers face in the development of their careers.

1)   Which are the most important topics that will be dealt in the Forum you chair?
A key issue in the development of our countries is to have skilled labor and human resources for the production and provision of services of enhanced added value. In this sense, it is very important to have more women committed to this process. We believe that degree courses in hard sciences and, particularly, in Engineering, offer a work scenario with great opportunities of development for women as well, mainly taking into account the role of information and communication technologies in the operation of all business companies, associations and the government itself.

However, the number of women registered in Engineering colleges is still low in comparison with other degree courses.

One of the objectives of the Forum is to discuss the causes of this phenomenon and propose possible alternatives to give rise to changes in the future.

Moreover, we want to analyze the obstacles that women engineers face in the development of their careers: which types of barriers to growth, discrimination and lack of information on the real needs in working roles are present in professional careers which have been almost exclusively practiced by men in previous years and, nowadays, there is no reason for any discrimination.

2)  According to your view, how should women’s interest in this profession be encouraged?

This is precisely one of the topics we want to analyze and look to arrive to some relevant conclusions at the end of the Congress.

Considering what has been discussed up to the present, I could say that awakening the interest by means of subjects such as Mathematics in primary schools and Physics in secondary schools seems to be the first challenge to encourage young women to take up degree courses in hard sciences such as Engineering.

President’s editorial

LABOR OMNIA VINCIT IMPROBUS
The year 2010 began. ENGINEERING 2010-ARGENTINA, with the strong support of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), is committed to concretize the event we have been building for the last four years, with the effort of a growing group of people, institutions and firms related to engineering, innovation and production.

The first day of April is the deadline for the submission of the already numerous abstracts of the papers to be discussed in October.

I invite colleagues from all over the world to enrich, with their papers, the tools that will enable our planet to achieve the Millennium Goals.

The achievement of these objectives requires the application of current and future knowledge as well as the appropriate institutional reforms. All this implies the development and the adoption of technological and organizational innovations.

Let us make a call for solidarity to nations, women and men so that the common good be the leading force to guide our efforts.

It is needless to say that not all the questions could be answered in October but they will serve to raise new discussions which will lead us to go on through the path that has brought us to this place in history.

A great effort has been made. There is still a hard way to go but as Virgil said:

      “HARD WORK CONQUERS ALL".

Till next publication.
