President's Editorial

We are already living in the year of the bicentenary. October is coming near and we should enter into the stage of effective realization of the objectives set forth almost five years ago.

The World Federation of Engineering Organizations assigned to the Argentine engineers the task of organizing.

We have accepted this challenge and we, all engineers, are working, together with the productive forces, on the purpose of contributing to accomplish the Millennium Goals.

And we are doing so with determination although the difficulties humanity is facing not only due to the action of human factors but also to the action of nature which, in a short time, struck heavily Haiti, Chile, China and other regions of our planet.

Engineering and productive forces should use their tools to fight on these two fronts.

We should have solidarity with the present and with the future.

To this end, growth is not enough; we should move towards the development stage that implies planning and wealth distribution which, at present, is missing in wide regions of our planet.

And this development must be sustainable.

Sustainable development implies an ethical and scientific basis as well. Human needs and the natural environment are interdependent. It is not possible to protect the environment with half of the humanity living in poverty or to ensure sustainable development in a planet with depleted natural resources.

We should have solidarity with present and future generations.

Let me quote a phrase of Paulo VI: “Development is the new name for Peace”.

ENGINEERING 2010 - ARGENTINA should fight for this peace.
